6 Reasons Why You Should Bet on Germany To Win The Euro

They waltzed to qualification, play inventive, exciting football and their squad seems tougher and more resolute than ever, watch out Spain, Germany are our favourites for Euro 2012. And at 5-1, that's not a bad gamble.

1. They cruised through qualification

Apart from co-hosts Poland and Ukraine, they were the first side to book their place at EURO 2012 next summer. They cruised through a group which included Turkey and Austria to qualify in style with a 100% record. And they haven’t lost a match, competitive or otherwise, since the defeat to Spain in the semi-final of last year’s World Cup. Joachim Löw has been building a solid team, playing attractive football in his five or so years in the manager’s job.

2. They’re even better than last year

Let’s begin with some statistics: Germany qualified for the tournament with two games to spare; they also finished with ten wins from ten, 13 points ahead of second-placed Turkey and with a goal difference of +27, by far and away the best record of any of the top European sides. There was a trend which really came to public light in South Africa last year: it was that Germany would play teams and hammer them. Australia, Argentina and especially England were blown away, not by their efficiency, but by their speed and invention, and that trend has continued since. German fans have now come to the point, and well they should, where they expect their team to beat everyone. I imagine it’s a view the players themselves share, which should in itself stand them in good stead for next summer’s big event.

3. Their squad is one big, happy family

There is a real harmony to the squads which Joachim Löw assembles. Philipp Lahm, recently chastised in the press for his scathing comments about ex- Germany managers Jürgen Klinsmann and Rudi Völler, retained the captaincy, and the respect of players and fans, by captaining his country to qualification, with the aid of verbal support from Löw himself. He’s also been in fantastic form for his club Bayern München, helping to make Manchester City – and Gareth Barry – look so ordinary in the Champions league last month.

4. They’ve got the experience

Then there’s Bastian Schweinsteiger to consider. The heartbeat of Bayern and Germany’s midfield, he’s been as consistent as ever this season. Since being converted to a central midfielder from a right-winger, he’s excelled in all forms of the game, and has become the complete midfielder, with penalty taking skills to boot. There’s also Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker, still in their mid-twenties, but both having over 80 international caps behind them. Both have endured tough starts to this season with their clubs – Mertesacker has had a taxing beginning to his premier League career, while Podolski’s Köln are near the bottom of the league, with him being criticised as someone who doesn’t play for his team. Both were, significantly enough, defended by Löw, however, and started last Friday’s game against Turkey. And why wouldn’t they: Podolski has a record of 43 goals in 93 appearances for Germany, while Mertesacker has been a regular since 2006.

German fans have now come to the point, and well they should, where they expect their team to beat everyone. I imagine it’s a view the players themselves share…

5. They’ve got oodles of young talent

As for the squad itself as a whole, Joachim Löw seems to have the biggest of all managerial selection headaches – perhaps that’s why he doesn’t tend to rotate his squad too much. But when he does call new and young players up, they seem to slot effortlessly into the team. Thomas Müller is a good example. He had only played two games for Germany before last year’s World Cup, yet ended up at the Golden Boot winner with five goals and three assists. More recently call-ups have included Mario Götze and André Schürrle, and it’s been the same story with them. Götze, rumoured to have been lined up by Arsene Wenger for a move to England, scored his first goal for his country in the impressive defeat of Brazil in August and has gone on to add another four caps, as well as a goal in September’s demolition of Austria.

Schürrle’s ascent to the top has been just as rapid: he is a winger who has scored five goals in just ten games for Germany, a stat which typifies the free-flowing and fluid style which Germany play – any number of players could have got on the scoresheet against Belgium last night. The experienced regulars like Schweinsteiger, Lahm Mertesacker and Podolski provide a superb compliment to the youthful energies of Götze and Schürrle. Coupled with the rest of the talent in the squad – Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira, Mesut Özil and even rookies such ass Marco Reus of Boorussia Mönchengladbach – it’s little wonder that Germany score so many goals. The rest of their squad is also looking strong. Manuel Neuer is currently many people’s candidate for the world’s best goalkeeper, while in defence, young players like Holger Badstuber (FC Bayern), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund) and Benedikt Höwedes (Schalke 04) are pushing for the chance to partner Mertesacker or Jerome Boateng next summer. Barrring Spain and possibly Holland, the German squad looks streets ahead of every other county.

6. They’re younger and quicker than Spain

For most of 2011, Germans have been declaring that Germany will be the nation to unseat Spain next summer. According to Löw, Franz Beckenbauer and most other German footballing figures, the team have learned their lessons from last year’s defeat. They are now younger and quicker than the Spanish team, which has been using the same blood for a number of years now. And Germany’s players aren’t caught up in club rivalries or at each others’ throats the next time a derby game comes round in the Bundesliga, unlike most of a Spain team comprised of players from Real Madrid or Barcelona.

In the long-term, systems are in placed to afford Germany the opportunity of dominating world football for years to come. In the short-term, the feeling here is one of optimism ahead of next year’s tournament. It’s a feeling that Germany fans can have very good reason for.

The future of Carlos Tevez remains up in the air after Internazionalejoined their city rivals Milan in bidding for the Manchester City forward. Milan's vice-president, Adriano Galliani, had lunch with Tevez and the player's adviser Kia Joorabchian in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday but while the Rossoneri believe they are the player's preferred destination, they are yet to reach agreement with City on a deal and Inter have now reportedly registered a bid of their own with the club.

Inter's technical director Marco Branca is understood to have met the City director Brian Marwood on Thursday, submitting an offer to take the player on loan until the end of the season and then make the deal permanent for €25m (£20.6m) in the summer. Milan have also been in contact with City, with the club's chief executive John MacBeath joining Galliani, Tevez and Joorabchian on a conference call on Thursday to discuss the details of a possible deal.

Gazzetta dello Sport report that Milan's offer could be a complex one, made up of a loan until the end of the season and then an obligation for the Rossoneri to make the deal permanent over the summer only if they are able first to sell a significant player from their existing squad. The newspaper speculates that the most likely names attached to this clause are Alexandre Pato and Robinho.

Joorabchian made it clear that his preference was a deal with Milan. "We had a dialogue with Inter over many months, but since August we haven't had any contact," he said. "Now we are talking only with Milan and Manchester City are fully aware of this."

The City manager Roberto Mancini said he simply hoped that a deal would be concluded by the end of the week, saying: "He has not played for three months, it's right that he gets back to doing so."

Who are football's top January transfer targets?

European football's January transfer window is now open, and clubs have started to intensify their scouting efforts in a bid to improve their chances of living up to expectations this season. Many managers don’t like spending a lot of money in the winter, but it could be the difference between success and failure.

I have taken a look at 10 players who realistically could leave their current clubs and strengthen many others around the world. Of course there are some star players who are expected to move soon, like Neymar or Wesley Sneijder, but I have not included them in my list since they will most likely be transferred when this season is finished.

So here is my list of the top targets this month. Some of them would be real bargains. Let me know what you think.

Carlos Tevez (Manchester City): The Argentina forward is volatile and moody, and has played more golf than football over the last couple of months, but is still one of the top strikers on the planet and would be worth a risk. Tevez has been publicly courted by AC Milan, who want an initial loan deal. It is clear he won’t play under Roberto Mancini at Manchester City again, so the English club would do well to sell him for a fee of around $30 million. If they are holding out for $50-60 million, they won’t get it.

Would be a perfect fit for: Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Arsenal.

Alex (Chelsea): It seems like the Brazil international has been around forever, but he is still only 29 and would be a great acquisition for any team who needs experience in defense. It baffles me that he was transfer-listed by Chelsea, and there should be no shortage of suitors. I believe he could move for a fee of around $8 million. Even the mighty Bayern Munich could be interested in picking up another solid center-back for that price.

Would be a perfect fit for: Arsenal, Milan, Bayern Munich.

Papiss Cisse (SC Freiburg): Explosive striker whose goalscoring record over the last season and a half has been tremendous. He has scored 33 goals in his last 49 matches for Freiburg, a team that is average at best. The 22 Bundesliga goals he scored last season were the most ever by an African player in Germany’s top flight. You may think he would not be a good investment considering he will be gone for nearly a whole month at the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, but I believe he would still be an asset for any team needing athleticism and fire power up front. Watch out for the 26-year-old, he will make a major impact at a major club very soon.

Would be a perfect fit for: Chelsea, Roma, Sevilla.

Roman Pavlyuchenko (Tottenham): Frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities at Spurs, the Russia striker is itching to move. His goalscoring record in the English Premier League is pretty good considering he hasn’t played many full games. He is mobile, skilful, holds the ball well and is a great finisher inside the box. I believe he could be a real bargain with a bid of around $19 million sufficient to tempt Tottenham to sell him.

Would be a perfect fit for: Ajax, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli.

Leandro Damiao (Internacional): Even though he has failed to impress me when playing for Brazil's national team, I can’t ignore his goalscoring record for Internacional. Damiao netted 40 times in all competitions in 2011 and has the speed and skill to become a quality striker. He would be a great signing for an up-and-coming team who can give him time to mature and get used to the faster pace of European football.

Would be a perfect fit for: Marseille, PSV Eindhoven, Malaga.

Milos Krasic (Juventus): The speedy Serbia winger has not fitted into Antonio Conte’s tactical plan at Juventus and will leave Turin sooner or later. The 27-year-old was great for most of last season in Italy and would be a valuable addition to any team needing an element of pace and unpredictability in their attacking play.

Would be a perfect fit for: Chelsea, FC Porto, Inter Milan.

Andrei Arshavin (Arsenal): This man is an enigma. The Russia captain has shown flashes of brilliance since moving to London in 2008, scoring four goals in one match at Anfield against Liverpool, but more often than not he flatters to deceive. This season the 30-year-old has been especially poor, scoring only twice in 21 appearances and often looking disinterested when he’s been on the pitch. I believe Arsene Wenger has failed to use him in his best position, just behind the striker. Since that won’t change, he could leave this month.

Would be a perfect fit for: Valencia, Benfica, Fiorentina.

Fredy Guarin (FC Porto): The Colombia international has excelled at Porto since signing in mid-2008 and has declared his desire to move. He is not motivated in Portugal at the moment and is pining for a transfer to one of the world’s top teams. Guarin is a multi-talented midfielder who can tackle, pass and score – a box-to-box player who would add strength in the center of the park. I have always liked to watch him play and believe he is ready to make the jump to a better league.

Would be a perfect fit for: Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan.

Victor Caceres (Libertad): Not many people know much about the Paraguay international, but he has been a key player for his club and country for the last three years. He has won a total of five national titles and is ready for a move to Europe. A hardworking defensive central midfielder, the 26-year-old Caceres would fit in well in Italy or Spain. The English Premier League might be a little too fast for him right now.

Would be a perfect fit for: Paris Saint-Germain, Valencia, Bayern Munich.

Mounir El Hamdaoui (Ajax): A lot of people have forgotten about the Moroccan striker since he has been ostracized at Ajax after clashing with manager Frank de Boer. The 27-year-old may not have played at all this season, but he would still be a good addition to any side looking for a solid finisher. He scored heaps of goals for AZ Alkmaar (43 in 57 Dutch league games) and would come in handy for the second part of the season. He will be fresh and willing to prove his worth.

Would be a perfect fit for: Villarreal, Wolfsburg, Everton

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is said to launched a dressing room rant at his players over their new craze for cutting the feet off their socks.

Football’s latest fashion fad has seen many Premier League players opting to play in tennis-style ankle socks, believing it gives them better traction inside their boots. But they need to retain the top half of the socks to keep clubs and match officials happy.

Players are wearing a tubular section of the official socks as a pair of sporty suspenders above their tennis socks, and then using masses of tape to hide the illicit white socks.

Redknapp has reportedly seen enough of his squad taking pairs of scissors to their socks and was tipped over the edge when a referee informed him that Spurs’ taping skills were not up to scratch ahead of a recent match.

Szczesny wasn’t the only thing wildly flying about Craven Cottage this week – so were rumours that Martin Jol wants to snap up Sheffield United’s 18-year-old centre-back Harry Maguire for £3m. That’s if he’s got any change left after signing Catania striker Maxi López for £10m. The Mirror reckons Bolton’s Gary Cahill may not become Chelsea’s Gary Cahill as soon as we expected. They reckon Gary has noticed Chelsea are … well … not much cop and is having second thoughts. He’s also asked for a guaranteed first-team place in the run-up to Euro 2012. Chelsea have refused despite the fact that they recently allowed a team managed by Alex McLeish to score three goals, a feat many particle theorists had thought to be against the law of physics.

Following an injury to Chris Brunt, West Brom are after a midfielder with an A* in GCSE French. Since Florent Malouda is out of their price range they’ll settle for Bolton’s Mark Davies, who once went to Cafe Rouge and is available for £4m. Roy Hodgson is also after Birmingham’s own-goal machine and sometime defender Liam Ridgewell. Newcastle want Ridgewell too although Alan Pardew has a special place in his heart for Swansea’s Ashley Williams, who he’s willing to pay £5.148732m for and not a penny more. Swansea want £8m.

The Newcastle Chronicle reckons that the rumours about Andy Carroll returning to Tyneside on loan are a load of piffle, though. That’s because Carroll would be a waste of money – even for free – and because Juventus have offered their striker Vincenzo Iaquinta on loan.

Manchester United are considering a £7m move for Basel midfielder Granit Xhaka. If they get him they’ll invent a time portal, push him through it and get young Granit to sabotage Basel’s famous Champions League victory over United. The only thing standing in their way is Hamburg, who are also interested, and the £88tn needed to develop a prototype time portal.

And finally in the Mail, newshound Sportsmail Reporter reckons Spurs will sign West Ham defender James Tomkins; Chelsea will loan out Gaël Kakuta to Marseille, Dijon or Olympiacos; and Everton will take Darron Gibson on loan for the rest of the season.

The Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra racism row took an unexpected bizarre twist today as this footage of Evra using the n-word emerged.

In footage from a French TV documentary about Monaco’s 2004 Champions League adventure, Evra is seen referring to opponents Chelsea as “motherf***ing n***ers”.

He also calls Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink a “motherf***er” and invites Frank Lampard to “suck my p**sy!”.

In Evra’s defence, he appears to be engaged in some sort of hotel room performance – perhaps parodying a 1970s movie.
